Invoices for outpatient care

UZ Brussel applies the third payer system whenever possible. This involves the health insurance fund paying its share of the costs directly to the hospital. As a patient, you therefore need only pay your own contribution and any supplements. This system can only be applied if you are affiliated to a health insurance fund and have provided us with your full membership details.
Any outpatient care which, for any reason, cannot be charged immediately will be billed to you later. Sums already paid will be deducted from such invoices.

The third payer system cannot be applied when incomplete or faulty administrative data is available. You will then be sent your invoice directly, jointly with a medical certificate. You may then recoup the costs yourself from your medical fund or health insurance. The outpatient bill which you will receive is a detailed invoice which lists the official RIZIV nomenclature of every service provided.

Work, sports or school accidents

Any treatment or examinations resulting from a work accident will be billed directly to the relevant insurer. You should notify the insurer of the accident (through your employer) and provide us with the correct details of your employer (the insurance holder) and the insurance company.
Costs resulting from sports or school accidents should, in first instance, be dealt with by your health insurance fund. You should then recoup your patient share through the sports club’s or school’s insurance.

Emergencies

When you arrive at consultations through the Emergency Ward, the attending doctor will conduct the first tests. If necessary, the attending doctor will refer you to a specialist, who will provide the necessary treatment. In such cases, you may be charged two consultations: one for the Emergency Ward doctor and another for the treating physician.
