What do we do?

The Intensive Care Department focuses on the treatment of critically ill patients.

This concerns patients who have undergone major surgery (cardiac, thoracic or abdominal surgery, neurosurgery), who are victims of a serious accident or who suffer from a serious illness.  These patients require close monitoring and support of their vital functions.

Patients in the department are provided with intensive treatment, relevant to their condition.  Examples of specific treatments include:

·         invasive or non-invasive mechanical ventilation (breathing support),

·         intermittent haemodialysis or continuous haemofiltration (treatment through artificial kidney),

·         thrombolysis (the dissolution of an obstruction in case of an acute myocardial infarction or massive lung embolism),

·         extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (support of the heart and lung functions).
