A caring employer

Excellent patient care is the direct product of engaged and contented caregivers. This is the premise of UZ Brussel’s human resources policy. Each day, 2,875 dedicated colleagues give their very best, at all levels from maintenance and reception, over nursing staff to top-flight surgeons.

The quest for quality care implies the need to invest in staff competencies and development. UZ Brussel consequently bases its HR policy on the following pillars:

  • engagement and creativity: building on its historic mission and traditions, UZ Brussel has always insisted on the engagement of all staff with the hospital’s core activities, its caring mission and its patients. This ensures that values such as team work, interdisciplinary collaboration, solidarity and social commitment are core to our organisation.
  • differentiation and support: providing caregivers with logistical support, secretarial services, on-site transport…ensures that they can focus fully on their professional mission and, as such, progress on the scales of both specialisation and responsibility.
  • Innovative technology and work environment: as a university hospital, we invest in technology and IT with a view to achieving both a seamless work organisation and offering the most advanced clinical solutions. This provides for a unique professional environment.
  • Investment in effective managers and training: besides their jobs as physicians or head nurses, many colleagues are required to perform management and leadership duties. Through the provision of enhanced manager training, we are actively committed to the ongoing development of staff. Evaluation, feedback, performance and development are our chief concern.
  • Diversity: UZ Brussel not only cares for a wide range of patients. It also actively pursues a staff diversification policy. Testimony to this approach is paid by the engagement of a vast group of non-national staff (in total, 26 different nationalities), the career opportunities provided to migrant workers (carers, nurses, lab technicians, …), the presence of inter-cultural mediators, staff policies tailored to the needs of older nurses, …These are all components of a genuine “Diversity Plan”.
  • work-life balance: Part-time work is an option within the daily and hourly work rosters at UZ Brussel. Combined with excellent on-site facilities (crèche, children’s holiday entertainment, campus sports centre, restaurant, …), our staff manage to achieve a satisfactory work-life balance.

attractive working conditions: a competitive salary with variable, supplementary incentive payments, a comprehensive benefits package (pension, hospital insurance), staff events, cycling allowance, … vast learning opportunities, and a homely work environment.
