AZ-VUB’s new name is UZ Brussel
The acronym AZ (academic hospital) in AZ-VUB caused confusing equation with a general hospital. Incorporating the word “university” in its name (UZ Brussel, meaning University Hospital Brussels) defines the hospital’s essence more accurately. Moreover, this terminology is in line with that of other university hospitals, such as UZ Gent, UZ Leuven and UZ Antwerpen.
Clearly, this does not diminish the hospital’s bonds with the Faculteit Geneeskunde en Farmacie (Medicine and Pharmacy Faculty), which will in fact be strengthened.
Through its name UZ Brussels, the hospital confirms its positioning as a Dutch-language hospital. There have sometimes been complaints about the lack of Dutch-language hospital services for Dutch speakers in Brussels. This ignores the existence of an ideal Dutch-language alternative: the Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel or UZ Brussel. But as is stated in our values: above all, we speak the language of the patient.
The new name is less complex but means more.
