Photodynamic Therapy - PDT

Photodynamic Therapy is a recent and effective technique used for treating precancerous conditions, such as Actinic Keratosis, small superficial basal carcinoma and Bowen’s Disease. This involves applying a photosensitive substance to the skin lesion. This substance is then irradiated with a visible red light. Free Oxygen Radicals subsequently ensure that (pre)cancerous cells are deleted while at the same time engendering an immune response. The treatment of other diseases is under development.
