Skin diseases in children
A number of skin diseases are related to age. Many young children, for example, suffer from Atopic Eczema, a condition which is less prevalent among adults. The treatment of this disease requires a global approach. Child Pneumologists, Child Gastroenterologists and Dieticians are closely involved.
On the contrary, Psoriasis is rarely encountered in children, through it is a common disease in adults. Hereditary diseases linked to skin anomalies are of particular interest to Child Dermatology. An accurate and judicious diagnosis can help ensure that patients receive timely genetic counsel.
Minor surgical procedures, Cryotherapy (cold therapy) and Laser Therapy, are also frequently applied with children. Procedures involving toddlers will often require their admission to the Day Hospital to ensure a smooth operation. The treatment of Congenital Naevus (congenital mole) in infants requires a very specific therapy. UZ Brussel in fact has become a centre of reference for such treatment.
