What do we do?
The haematology department conducts laboratory research for the diagnosis and follow-up of haematological and Immunologic disorders as well as providing relevant clinical advice. Such disorders comprise anomalies of the blood cells (Anaemia and Leukaemia), haemostatic disorders (propensity to bleeding, Thrombophilia) and anomalies of the immunologic status (Autoimmune Diseases, Immune Deficiencies, Monoclonal Gammopathy).
The department also conducts tissue typing (HLA Typing for transplants, identification of organ and haematopoietic stem cell donors) and parental testing. The molecular haematology activity tracks down genetic reassortment and chromosome translocations for diagnosing of Leukaemia and Lymphoma and for tracking minimal residual disease linked to this condition. The haematology department provides an oral anticoagulant consultation as well as a haemostasis and thrombophilia consultation linked to clinical haematology. There is also a paternal testing consultation which provides relevant information to interested couples.
The haematology department is also responsible for the marrow donor bank of UZ Brussel, which is part of the Belgian marrow donor program. Donor candidates are invited to contact the marrow donor bank consultation. Full contact details are show under the section Consultations.
The haematology department contributes to the training of doctors at the medicine and pharmacy faculty of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel/VUB. It offers internships to clinical biologists and to laboratory technicians.
