Survival kit

John needs to spend some time in hospital.  He’s not exactly thrilled about this.  But the doctor did a full check-up and decided he should spend a few nights in care.   There’s something wrong with John’s left ear.  This is annoying because he can’t hear the teacher in the classroom.

  • Why can’t she just speak louder? John had asked.

But that wouldn’t solve the problem, of course.

  • What can I take with me? John asks his mum.

Mum knows that the sooner John feels at home, the easier his admission and stay at the hospital will be.

  • What would you really like to take with you? asks mum.
  • Gosh, let’s see, definitely Rupert bear and all my Disney comics and also that huge new puzzle that granny gave me and Felix too, of course.
  • Now let’s see, says mum, it’s probably best if Felix stays here, you know cats are not supposed to be taken to a people’s hospital. But all the other stuff is fine.

Mum gives John his bag.

  • Try to mark your name on all your things, you little slob. If the nurses at the hospital have to track down Rupert bear’s owner, they won’t have any time left to look after you.. Look, here’s just the spot on Rupert where you can write your name.

While John packs his bag, mum makes a list of all the things they should take to the hospital.

  • Mum, will you also be sleeping at the hospital? asks John
  • Yes of course, at least the first few nights.
  • And dad too? is John’s next question.
  • Well daddy really needs to look after Jenny, but they will come and visit you every day. Granny will phone you often, isn’t that great?

John agrees this is good news.  He could also call Aunty Mel or Uncle Henry or Wayne who is his classmate.  John is starting to feel a bit happier…

  • Haven’t you forgotten your toothbrush? asks Mum
