What do doctors examine ?

Click on one of the objects below:

Taking blood

My arm hangs loose like a rag doll.  An elastic band is squashing my arm. Ouch! A jab and a hole in my arm.  The blood just flows into the syringe.  Stop! You have enough there! Now just stick a pretty plaster on it.

Ear examination

The doctor looks into your ears with a special pocket lantern.

  • Do you see anything, doctor? asks John.
  • You’re tickling me, mister.
  • Nothing? Maybe in the other ear?

Scans

Sometimes the doctor cannot see anything wrong with you from the outside.  He will then need to take pictures with a special device which allows him to see straight through you.  These pictures are called scans or x-rays and they are made with an x-ray machine, a scanner or an ultrasound.  You will sometimes have to lie on a bed and a large machine will be moved in front of your tummy or your back.  The doctor will sometimes say:

  • Hold your breath and remain very still.

If you do move, then the doctor will not be able to see properly.  The picture will then be no good and he will have to take another one.  Sometimes you can watch a screen with the doctor and you will see your insides.  Look, this is what the inside of your head looks like.  Some machines make quite a lot of noise, but that doesn’t matter.
