What do we do?

Haematology is the medical discipline which deals with the diagnosis and the treatment of blood diseases.   These diseases emerge in the blood, the marrow and/or the lymphatic system (lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, lymphatic tissues in diverse organs).

Haematology at UZ Brussel comprises two separate entities:

§  Clinical Haematology (unit within the Department for Medical Oncology-Haematology, which resorts under the Department for Internal Medicine)

The Clinical Haematology Unit offers consultations to patients and provides diagnosis and treatment of both benign and malignant blood diseases.

§  Haematology Laboratory (unit which resorts under the Department for Clinical Biology.

The Haematology Laboratory conducts laboratory tests for the diagnosis and treatment of haematological and immunological disorders and provides related clinical counsel.

Both entities (clinic and laboratory) are linked to the research group Haematology-Immunology of the Free University Brussels.

30 years of clinical and scientific expertise has been accumulated in relation to Multiple Myeloma (Kahler’s Disease) and similar diseases, which has been garnered within the Myeloma Centre Brussels (MCB).
