The Department’s history and development
The founder and first Head of the Endocrinology Department was prof. L. Vanhaelst, who offered consultations jointly with his successor, prof. B. Velkeniers. Initially they concentrated on patients with Thyroid Disorders, and occasionally Hypophysis problems. Over time the number of consultations increased and the pathologies’ complexity was extended, to such an extent that more multidisciplinary consultations were instituted.
Hypophysis Consultation
This led, among others, to the Hypophysis Consultation, in collaboration with the Neurosurgery Department (prof. J. D’Haens) where the hormonal Hypophysis elements and the pre and postoperative aspects of a Hypophysis condition are treated in conjunction. A similar consultation is in place for Osteoporosis with the Rheumatology Department (prof. L. Verbruggen).
The treatment of Thyroid disorders has been a prime focus since the department’s inception. Besides offering the best possible care to patients, additional value added was pursued, notably a multidisciplinary consultation involving a proper Thyroid referral clinic. The best example is shown by the treatment of Thyroid Nodules. On the same day as their consultation, patients can undergo an Echo-guided Punction at the hands of a Radiologist. While a Pathologist interprets the Cytology, a Scintigraphy may be conducted by the Radioisotopes Department. In cases where an operation is advised, surgery can take place within a couple of weeks.
Clinical research
Besides clinical activity, the Department also conducts clinical research with a specific focus on the relationship between Thyroid disorders and infertility. Research into the regulation of the Hypophysis during normal and pathologic conditions. Research in the field of Obesity.
