Permanent methods

Male sterilisation involves tying up the spermatic cords under local anaesthetic. This is called a vasectomy. We are happy to refer you to the Urology service for this.

Women can be sterilised by means of a laparoscopy (keyhole surgery in the abdomen) or under general anaesthetic. This involves blocking or removing the fallopian tubes.

This method provides permanent contraception and should only be applied for women who no longer wish to have children!
