What is Brugada syndrome?

Brugada syndrome is a genetic heart disease that manifests itself in a typical abnormal pattern on the electrocardiogram. This is due to the fact that electrical signals in the heart are disturbed. The syndrome was named after the three Brugada brothers.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Brugada syndrome include:

• Dizziness
• Fainting
• Palpitations
• Sometimes sudden death

The symptoms usually occur at night and can be precipitated by fever or by taking certain medications.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis can be made in various ways:

• Electrocardiogram
• Exercise or cycle test
• Holter ECG

In the Heart Rhythm Management Center Brugada syndrome can also be elicited by an ajmaline test or during an electrophysiology test.

Due to the genetic component there is comprehensive collaboration with the Centre for Medical Genetics at UZ Brussel. UZ Brussel has special expertise in family screening and treatment of rhythm problems in children.
