Dermatological surgery
What?
Dermatological surgery is used to remove benign skin lesions (such as skin cysts, birthmarks or dermal naevi, lipoma or fatty lumps) or malignant tumours on the skin under local anaesthetic.
Treatment?
A specific technique is applied for malignant tumours: micrographic oriented histologic surgery or MOHS for short. The skin cancer, which frequently occurs on the face, is totally removed.
With this technique, as much healthy skin as possible is spared. This limits the disfigurement of the face and the risk of a recurrence of the cancer.
Precautions?
You do not need to have an empty stomach for procedures involving local anaesthetic in the Dermatology service.
