Basic research
With the support of funds from UZ Brussel and other institutions such as the Scientific Research Fund, important basic research is carried out into the barrier function of the skin, in particular the protective role played by the epidermis.
This research is intended to lead to a better understanding and optimal treatment of genetic disorders such as ichtyosis (a group of predominantly hereditary disorders characterised by dry, rough and flaky skin), and common inflammatory skin diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis.
Additional biogenetic research projects in paediatric dermatology target research into very large congenital birthmarks.
